Columbus Daughters of the Revolution plan Constitution Week activities

Communities throughout the nation will be celebrating the spirit and meaning of the country’s Constitution beginning September 17.

On this day in 1787, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, 39 delegates at the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution of the United States of America.

Nearly 170 years later, in 1955, DAR spearheaded an effort to set aside one week annually when Americans could celebrate this iconic signing.

After petitioning Congress to set aside the week of September 17 - 23, on August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Constitution Week into law. Local chapters of NSDAR celebrate with many events to honor this founding document.

Columbus Mayor Lori An Gobert, signed a proclamation commemorating Constitution Week at their recent city council meeting on September 9.

Celebrations will kick off next Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 2:45 p.m., when the DAR, Vietnam Veterans, and Sons of the American Revolution will meet at the flagpole at the Veteran Memorial Center at 1349 Legion Dr. for a short ceremony.

At 3:00 p.m. that same day, local churches agreed to ring their bells simultaneously for one minute with other Bells Across America.

A Constitution Week presentation and books will be on display at the Nesbitt Memorial Library from September 16 to September 22.

KULM (FM 98.3) will air public service announcements highlighting our Constitution throughout the week, so listen in.
