The Weimar Wildcats secured their first win of the 2024 season after they defeated Somerville 6521 in their home opener.
The Wildcats were in complete control for the entire game thanks in large part to their rushing attack.
In last week’s loss to Boling the Wildcats’ rushing attack was held to only 158 yards and scored only one touchdown. It was a bit uncharacteristic of the Wildcats high flying offense to be held to only one touchdown.
The Wildcats were frustrated and knew they were better than what they presented in week one.
They knew they had to bounce back in week two and needed to have a sharper offensive game if they were going to respond and get their first win of the season. Their response was to the tune of 379 total rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.
The Wildcats’ offense frustration was taken out on Somerville where they had nearly three 100-yard rushers in the game. Jerron Fisher was the lead rusher who carried the ball six times for 147 yards and three touchdowns.
Right behind Fisher was Derreon Johnson who carried the ball 12 times for 109 yards and a touchdown. Zack Norrell was just seven yards shy of a 100-yard game, he recorded 93 yards and two touchdowns.
With three viable options being productive out of the back field quarterback Huxton Kloesel got in on the fun and carried the ball three times for 21 yards and a touchdown. The final Wildcat rushing touchdown came from Ty Chmelik who punched in a two-yard run for the Wildcats.
Defensively, the Wildcats lived in Somerville’s back field stuffing the run game and keeping the quarterback under duress. Somerville was able to find some points in the game but with the Wildcat offense firing on all cylinders their fate was sealed.
The Wildcats’ special teams unit also had a strong game blocking multiple punts and even returning a punt for a touchdown.
With week two in the rearview mirror the Wildcats look ahead to a matchup with another Colorado County school in the Rice Raiders on Thursday, Sept. 12, in Weimar.
