Raiders’ defense records shutout for second straight week

Raiders’ defense records shutout for second straight week

The Rice Raiders are off to a fantastic start to the season with back-to-back shutouts to start their season with a 2-0 record.

The Raiders defeated the Shiner Comanches 23-0 in their home opener putting on a show for all the fans in attendance.

The Raiders have played a total of eight quarters so far this football season and in those eight games not a single point has been scored. Their defense is playing with a bend don’t break mentality.

Their pass rush is violent, strong and aggressive, they pin their ears back and simply get after the quarterback. Shiner’s offense had no time to think because the Raiders smothered them.

The Raiders gave up the occasional chunk play to Shiner’s offense but no matter how close they got to the goal line the Raiders never let them cross. They played with swagger and confidence and came away with a second win because of it.

Offensively the Raiders started a little slow and needed time before scoring their first touchdown of the game. But once they did, there was no slowing them down.

Kordae Johnson completed 13 of his 17 passes (76%) for 151 yards and one interception. While the interception is a blemish on his stat line, the dual threat sophomore quarterback continues to impress under center for the Raiders.

His top target was D’Neriyan Ful ler who caught seven balls for 107 yards and one touchdown. John Woods was second on the list for receiving hauling in 2 passes for 45 yards.

The Raiders had a lot of success running the football as well rushing the ball 26 total times for 231 yads and two touchdowns. Dyren Johnson was the lead rusher carrying the ball nine times for 74 yards.

Robert Bennett was second in rushing after he carried the ball five times for 65 yards and a touchdown. RJ Meyers also was involved in the rushing attack for the Raiders scoring the other rushing touchdown for the Raiders.

The Raiders currently sit with a record of 2-0 and will look to improve their record but it will not be easy as their next opponent is a Colorado County showdown as they take on the Weimar Wildcats on Thursday, Sept. 12, in Weimar.
