Columbus soccer teams take shutout losses

As the soccer season enters its final weeks, both the Cards and the Lady Cards have been competing with some of the other top teams in their district to try to finish as high on the district standings as possible. As the soccer season enters its final weeks, both the Cards and the Lady Cards have been competing with some of the other top teams in their district to try to finish as high on the district standings as possible. While both teams have made strides towards reaching the top of the district, last week brought some pitfalls that slowed down their progress.

While the Lady Cards dealt with some negatives from last week, they started the week on a positive note with a big 1-0 victory against El Campo. Columbus found the crucial goal and relied on their stout defense to hold on for the win. Unfortunately for the Lady Cards, they could not repeat their performance on either side of the ball against the district-leading Bay City Lady Blackcats. Bay City took control of the game with high intensity and pressure on both offense and defense. Columbus never got any momentum heading towards the opposing goal as their offense sputtered. The Lady Cards failed to find a goal as they suffered a big 8-0 defeat to the team just ahead of them in the standings. The Cards had it tougher over the last week as they failed to score a goal in either of their two competitions. Their lack of offensive firepower resulted in two straight losses that harmed the Cards’ chances at a top-3 spot in the district standings. They started with a close game against El Campo as their defense had a relatively solid performance. Columbus held El Campo to just one goal as they bought time for the offense to catch up. Unfortunately, the offense did not create the necessary chances as the Cards fell to the 1-0 defeat. Columbus followed up that performance with an even more difficult defeat against the boys of Bay City. The Blackcats scored four goals in the game while keeping a clean sheet by keeping Columbus scoreless for the second straight game in the 4-0 win.

After the back-to-back defeats, the Cards stand at fourth place in the district with only two games remaining in the regular season.
