The new Lady Raiders

The Huddle

Hello, everyone and welcome to the Huddle, where today we are talking about the Rice Lady Raiders volleyball team.

There’s something different about them and if you have been to a game, you would know exactly what I am talking about.

For those who haven’t Let me explain. Going back to last season where the Lady Raiders were a little green when it came to volleyball. Commonly referred to as a “growing pains season”.

They went into the off-season with an overall record of 11-33 and a district record of 2-12. They were learning though and towards the end of the season they were showing major improvements, but these girls are competitors, you think they liked losing?

They carried a huge chip on their shoulder into their summer training and showed up to camp with a different mentality. They were tired of being marked as an “easy game” on team’s schedules and were ready to show that they belonged.

They started their season with an edge to their game. Unapologetically aggressive but humble at the same time.

They played with a different type of intensity and found a lot of early success because of it. But they remained humble because they knew they still had a few things to learn in the game of volleyball.

It’s kind of cool to see for the first time, because ever since I’ve arrived in Colorado County the stigma around Rice is they are the “little brother/little sister” school when it came to athletics.

As I said earlier, these girls want to compete, they don’t like losing just as any other athlete. This year they came into the season with the mentality of “little brother/ little sister is going to hit back”.

They have been playing with a ton of confidence and have been stacking wins up left and right. They have been in the mix of every tournament they have been in so far this season, even winning a silver medal at their host tournament a couple of weeks ago.

This new version of the Rice Lady Raiders currently sits with an 1117 record matching last year’s win total and we’re only a quarter of the way through the season. It is a sign of things to come out in Rice and they are only going to get better.

The district season is right around the corner and that’s going to be a good test for the Lady Raiders, and they are ready for the challenge. As the season moves along keep an eye on the Lady Raiders to make a big impact in their district schedule and make a push for a playoff spot.

Thank you everyone for reading the Huddle, I will see you all next week.
