COLUMBUS CARDINALS 63, LA GRANGE LEOPARDS 21
The Columbus Cardinals improved to 2-0 after they defeated the La Grange Leopards 63-21 in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 6, in Columbus.
The game was tightly contested int he first quarter, but the Cardinals put their foot on the gas in the second and did not look back.
The game started with the Cardinals and the Leopards trading touchdowns and leaving the score tied 14-14 after the first quarter. The Leopards found the endzone once more in the second quarter, but the Cards scored 28 points in the second quarter to make the score 42-21 at halftime.
The Cards shutout La Grange in the second half while the offense tacked on 21 more points to their lead. The Cardinals had a balanced offensive attack, but their ability to run the football was prominently displayed beneath the Friday night lights.
Grayson Rigdon continued to impress in his first season playing 11-man football. Last week Rigdon amassed 245 yards and scored two touchdowns.
In week two Rigdon recorded another 200-yard game finishing with a total of 208 yards. He found the endzone four times on Friday counting for 28 of the Cards 63 points.
With Rigdon having a big game this opened the field up for the passing game to take their shots and Adam Schobel took full advantage of it. Schobel completed 19 of his 21 pass attempts (90%) Friday night where he found seven different receivers for positive gains up the field. He finished the game with a total of 247 yards and four touchdowns Camdon Pitchford hauled in six of Schobel’s passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Jack and John Schobel each caught one ball each and both were a touchdown, Rigdon and Braylon Fisher were also featured in the pass game combining for seven catches for 94 yards.
Defensively the Cards allowed 21 points in the first half but cleaned it all up in the second. They shut out the Leopards and came away with a of turnovers thanks to an interception by Xavier Woods.
The defense did their job keeping the La Grange offense in check and did an excellent job of getting the ball back in their offense’s hands every opportunity they had.
The Cardinals are rolling early in the season and look to collect their third win in as many weeks when they take on Needville on Friday, Sept. 13, in Columbus.
