Ladycats take home bronze

The Weimar Ladycats participated in the Lady Raiders Volleyball Classic and they made a name for themselves in a big way.

At the beginning of the season there were a few questions about the Ladycats and how their team would look after losing a few seniors last year.

After these past two tournaments where they have almost dominated in silence, those questions have been put to bed. The Ladycats played a total of eight games during the tournament and only lost two of those games.

Now that stat sounds like it is not that impressive but considering they were matched up some games against bigger schools and still winning that stat becomes impressive.

During the first day of the tournament the Ladycats took on Palacios, Van Vleck and St. Paul. The Ladycats only needed six sets to win all three of these games and they completely dominated all six of those sets.

Against Palacios the Ladycats gave up only 21 points between the two sets and claimed victory with scores of 25-8 and 25-13. Against Van Vleck the Ladycats defense put on a masterclass giving up only 13 points in the entire game.

The Ladycats swept Van Vleck 25-5 and 25-8 setting them up for their final match against St. Paul. The Ladycats’ defense again played a strong game that was coupled with a potent offense leading to yet another sweep with scores of 25-16 and 25-14.

Day two started with a Ladycats and Hallettsville Sacred Heart match that saw the Ladycats win in two sets again (25-21; 2526). Then the Ladycats ran into Burton, and they were ready to spoil the Ladycats day.

The Ladycats had won all eight sets they played in so far this tournament and Burton was ready to put an end to that. The Ladycats lost the first set and battled till the very end in the second set but alas they were handed their first loss of the tournament (2514; 27-25).

Their next game was one of the best in the tournament because of how it had to be decided. The Ladycats and Flatonia engaged in an all out war of points with both teams claiming a victory in oneset each.

The third set was unable to provide a winner, so it came down to a coin toss. Yes, a coin toss, luck was on the Ladycats’ side though and they were declared the winner in the match earning a spot in the Gold bracket.

The Gold Bracket consisted of the Ladycats, Columbus, Iola and Burton and the Ladycats were paired with Iola to see who goes to the championship game. The Ladycats lost this game in two sets (25-18; 25-15) the loss put them in the 3rd place game where the took on a fellow member of Colorado County, the Columbus Lady Cardinals.

This was another great game in the tournament with the teams needing three sets to earn their Bronze medals. The first set went in the Lady Cards favor with a score of 25-15, but the Ladycats were not leaving empty handed.

They came back in the final two sets and despite the Lady Cards offensive surges throughout the rest of the game the Ladycats finished the game with two hard fought set victories (25-20; 25-23).

The Ladycats look to continue to build off of the momentum they received from the strong performances in the past two tournaments, they will be playing Hallettsville Sacred Heart on Tuesday, Sept. 3, as their season rolls on.
