What time does the church bus leave? The routine described in the title is about the same each fall. However, the level of excitement this year is over the top. Blame it on Dave Campbel l’s Texas Footbal l Magazine. Will we expect too much? Does it affect the boys? I am talking about the projected rank of #2 in the state in 3A Division 1 Texas High School football.
Our community is blessed. The fans follow the team, usually outnumbering the opponents. The fans love to yell their “BIG RED.” Our businesses decorate their windows with creative words. The sign artist does it better each year and the support of downtown certainly makes a difference. So, what is our end result? An overwhelming victory over the Cuero Gobblers in week one. This time of year, numerous joyful occurrences have occurred. The fields are strewn with bales of hay. The scene is leading to the colors of fall and Thanksgiving. Students are back and immersed in learning. The transition of clothes from summer to fall is exciting. Bands, parades, and cheer leaders add to the spirit of it all.
Think about the pride that generations feel when families can tell their stories of participation when they were in school. My special joy of attending games in my wheelchair is the kindness of the helpers who offer assistance when transferring to and from wheelchair and stadium seat (both at the beginning and end of the game). George, of course, you are #1.
Columbus has a rigorous schedule of quality opponents, so find your Cardinal gear/apparel, and invite a friend to go with you to watch high school football at its finest. See you at the home game this Friday night at Massey Stadium here in Columbus. Did somebody forget to red-light the water tower for week one.
