School tax rates pass

COLORADO COUNTY

The 2024-2025 school year tax rates were discussed, proposed and implemented for school districts across Colorado County to close out the first month back to school.

The boards of Columbus Independent School District, Weimar ISD and Rice Consolidated ISD all passed new tax rates for the ongoing school year, with some districts seeing stark differences in their rates compared to last year.

Columbus ISD adopted a property tax rate of $0.7742, with $0.6669 set aside for Maintenance and Operations (M&O) and $0.1073 for Interest and Sinking (I&S).

The M&O rate was decreased from $0.7236 to $0.6669 after the tax rate compression of HB3, a $0.0567 difference. The I&S tax rate also decreased from $0.16 to $0.1073, a $0.0527 difference. The total tax rate has decreased $0.1094, with the previous rate sitting at $0.8836.

Weimar ISD’s adopted property tax rate sits a little higher at $0.8769, with $0.6669 set aside for M&O similar to Columbus ISD’s and $0.21 set aside for I&S, almost double that of Columbus ISD’s.

The total tax rate decreased by $0.0023, from the previous school year’s $0.8792 to $0.8769 currently.

“We are excited to save the taxpayers tax dollars,” said Angie Luksovsky, Weimar ISD Business Manager. “We are happy to be able to do that and still provide enough money to educate our children. It all depends on how much revenue we generate with local, state and federal. Enrollment and property value have been increasing, which generates more revenue for us to meet all of our expenses.”

Rice CISD adopted a property tax rate of $0.87020, with $0.7020 set aside for the M&O tax rate and $0.16820 set aside for the I&S tax rate.
