The Daughters of the Republic of Texas congratulates the following Columbus students for their entries to contests sponsored by the DRT.
In January, fourth graders from Ms. Kristen Drymalla’s class at Columbus Elementary School and Ms. Mary Tromblee’s class at St. Anthony’s Catholic School submitted artwork to the DRT Art Contest. The posters depicted historical events from Colorado County prior to 1850. Winners were Bella Kelley (first place), Joy Ellison (second place), and Landry Venghaus (third place).
In February, seventh graders in Ms. Danette Cantu’s class from St. Anthony’s Catholic School composed essays on their choice of one of the 59 signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Winners were Aiden Glueck (first place) on Sam Houston, Trystin Radley (second place) on Richard Ellis, and Logan Glueck (third place) on Andrew Briscoe.
DRT chapter members reviewed all works presented and chose the top three for local awards. The students’ hard work is then forwarded to the district and/or state level for further evaluation and possible awards.
Meanwhile, Donna Pustejovsky, chapter vice president, stopped at Eagle Lake Intermediate School and presented some items to the library. Librarian Sharon Geigley graciously accepted a Republic of Texas map, Texas Declaration of Independence, Travis’ call to arms for the Alamo, replica Texas Republic money, and the book, “Davy Crockett, In His Own Words” to add to their Texas History collection.
The DRT is the oldest women’s patriotic organization in Texas, and is dedicated to the preservation and education of Texas history.
