Lady Cards go home with a bronze medal

Lady Cards go home with a bronze medal

The Columbus Lady Cards traveled to Schulenburg to play in the Lady Horns Volleyball Classic.

Coming off of their host tournament where they finished in second place, the Lady Cards looked to secure gold in Schulenburg.

Day One

The Lady Cards started the tournament by taking on another Colorado County school in the Weimar Ladycats. The Lady Cards came into this tournament as the 4th ranked team in all of 3A and did what they do best and that’s win volleyball games.

They best the Ladycats in two sets with scores of 25-17 and 25-20 to get some early momentum in the tournament. The Lady Cards looked unstoppable in game one but got challenged in game two.

St. Joe proved to be a good challenge for the Ladycats because St. Joe handed the Lady Cards their first set loss of the tournament 25-20. St. Joe’s victory was short-lived because the Lady cards returned to form in sets two and three winning both 25-22 and 25-19.

Game three saw the Lady Cards again dominate and win their game in two sets with score of 25-12 and 2516 over Brazos. With a 3-0 record heading into Day Two the Lady Cards were feeling confident but they were about to run into some adversity.

Day Two

To start Day Two the Lady Cards were handed their first loss of their tournament and only their third of the season. The loss came at the hands of Burton, and it only took two sets to give the Lady Cards the loss.

Losses happen throughout the season, and they never define a team, what defines them is how they respond to the loss and the Lady Cards responded in a big way.

Thier next game was against Flatonia and after a slow start to the game Lady Cards Head Volleyball Coach Kaylee Johns called a timeout to get her team going. The timeout was more of a wakeup call to her team rather than to talk strategy, she fired her team up and when the broke the huddle and new Lady Cards team took the court.

After the timeout the Lady Cards allowed Flatonia to score 18 points total between the two sets and the Lady Cards claimed their victory. In their last game during Day Two the Lady Cards took on the host Schulenburg and swept them in two sets with scores of 25-17 and 25-20.

Day Three

The Lady Cards found themselves in the Gold Bracket for the final day of the tournament where they were matched up with St. Joe again. It is hard to beat a team twice in any sport and volleyball is no different.

St. Joe won the first set 25-20 but the Lady Cards responded in kind by winning the second set 25-21. Last time these two played each other it followed the exact same script with the Lady Cards claiming victory in the third set.

St. Joe did not forget how their first meeting with the Lady Cards went and decided to flip the script in the third set giving the Lady Cards their second loss of the tournament and fourth of the season.

The loss put the Lady Cards in the third-place game which they won beating the host Schulenburg for a second time in the tournament.

The Lady Cards still have plenty of volleyball action scheduled for this week and are looking to stack more wins up in hopes of another playoff berth.
