City mulls engine brake ordinance, more

COLUMBUS — The Columbus City Council met in regular session Feb. 27.

The council heard public comments including from Debbie Damon concerning the city’s engine brake ordinance. City Manager Donald Warschak noted in his report that the city’s attorney is working on an ordinance regarding the use of engine brakes within the city.

Warschak also announced that the county’s hazardous clean-up day will take place at the fairgrounds on March 18.

The council also approved improvement projects. Mayor Lori An Gobert read each including the amount and project the expenditure fund pertained to: “That the City Council hereby approves the above-referenced project and the expenditure of funds of the Columbus Community and Industrial Development Corporation in the amount of $100,000.00 for the upgrade and improvements to the Little League Baseball and Softball restroom facilities.”

“That the City Council hereby approves the above-referenced project and the expenditure of funds of the Columbus Community and Industrial Development Corporation in the amount of $25,000 for façade and front yard improvements to a building located at 920 Milam Street.” “That the City Council hereby approves the above-referenced project and the expenditure of funds of the Columbus Community and Industrial Development Corporation in the amount of $31,950 for kitchen and patio improvements for a new restaurant location.”

Each project read as authorized by Section 505.158, Chapter 505, Texas Local Government Code, said expenditure to exceed $10,000.00.

Councilman Chuck Rankin for Place 5 described the work being done as terrific in terms of what is being done to help the community. He would like to see what transpires with the improvement of each project. Councilman Michael Ridlen for Place 4 agreed. Mayor Gobert said something will be prepared for the next meeting.

Rankin motioned for approval and Councilman Keith Cummings for Place 2 second.
