Vets lose 5-4 to undefeated Jackrabbits in championship

The Weimar Vets met the Serbin Jackrabbits on the evening of Sunday, August 11th in the Championship Final of the Community Baseball League at the La Grange Fairgrounds.

The Vets jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, with a key hit by Trent Brown, who scored on an RBI by Carson Peschel. Vets starting third baseman Mason Lampe helped the cause with a two-RBI single later in the inning. The Jackrabbits were left scoreless until the fourth inning, when they sneaked in two runs on an RBI double by third baseman Mason Becker, and an RBI single by catcher Kadyn Hall. They added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 3-3.

It was a pitcher’s duel throughout, with each team giving up only nine hits. The Vets were led by starting pitcher Cody Pfeffer, who allowed only two runs on six hits through five complete innings. Pitchers Matt Sandoval and Mason Lampe kept the Vets close for an additional two innings. Trevor Brown completed a nearly flawless final inning, throwing only eleven pitches to retire the side.

Jackrabbits reliever Wyatt Wick held the Vets scoreless for four innings, striking out ten, which gave Serbin just enough room to score two more runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. The Vets scored their final run on an RBI single by catcher Kyle Peschel in the seventh, but were unable to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation with two outs. In the end, the Jackrabbits came out on top 5-4.

We were blessed to be joined in the dugout by Vets head coach Bear Kana, who is recovering from a recent accident. His return and enthusiasm gave us a needed lift throughout the game.

The Vets players and coaches would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all those who showed up to support our team this summer, and to all of our generous sponsors. Thanks to Tom Strickland for always going out of his way to make Veterans Memorial Park-Strickland Field such an incredible place to play. Thank you to Gary Dusek for broadcasting this season on KVLG-KBUK, and to the Weimar Mercury for taking photos and publishing our game summaries each week. See you all next season!
