Hello everyone and welcome back to the Huddle.
Today we are discussing, or I guess reviewing the Columbus Varsity Volleyball Classic.
That sounds like it could be bad, but I have only good things to say about the tournament.
This was my first year experiencing the tournament because last year I did not join the Citizen until late September. So I really did not know what to expect going into last Thursday.
I have covered early- season tournaments before, and they all had the same feeling about them. What I mean is most of these early season tournaments the teams show up play at let’s say half speed and try to tidy up their game before entering the regular season.
That was not the case for this tournament.
Each set was decided by a handful of points each game, and every team walked away with some good hard-earned wins in their pockets. Smaller schools were beating bigger schools, and bigger schools were delivering when matched up against each other in heavyweight bouts throughout the tournament.
But what made this tournament different in my eyes was how much the losses affected teams.
While losses hurt and can be demoralizing to a team especially early in the season every single team that lost a game in this tournament found a way to secure a win shortly after their loss.
None of these teams dwelled on the negatives and always showed up to their next scheduled game with a renewed sense of confidence and it made for very competitive games.
No matter what team you were cheering on every game had excitement. At a time in the year when it is easy to take things slow and ease back into the season, all these teams said, “We are coming to win this thing, and I dare one of y’all to try and stop us.”
These teams showed up ready for war, and I do not say that lightly every single game that was played in this tournament could have gone either way, it was that competitive. Each team had a chip on their shoulder to prove something and put teams on notice.
It was a great introduction to the volleyball season and maybe a sign of things to come with plenty of exciting matchups scheduled around the County so make sure you stay up to date with us at the Citizen and I will see you guys in the next Huddle.
