Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club welcomed speaker Vicki Powers, who has been the Librarian at the David and Eula Winterman Library for the past 23 years. Each summer, the library hosts a 6-week Summer Reading Program for children in the community.
This June-July, 53 children were enrolled, grades Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Exciting speakers and demonstrations were enjoyed by the kids each week. Interactive programs from Texas A&M Science Road Show and The Houston Museum of Natural Science along with other special speakers entertained the students and motivated them to read and research to learn more about our wonderful world.
Each student had reading goals to reach throughout the program. The K-2 graders met their goal by reading nearly 300 books. The 3rd through 5th graders read 22,208 pages to meet their goal. Many prizes were awarded during the Celebration Pizza Party at the end of the “Adventure Begins at Your Library Summer Reading Program.”
Vicki also reminded the Lions to purchase their tickets for the Friends of the Library 45th Annual Auction and Dinner, to be held at the Community Center on Saturday, September 21. Highlights of the evening include purchasing delicious home-made Goodies at the Bakery Booth; Enjoying a mouth-watering dinner prepared by Monster Bites; Bidding on over 100 items during the Silent Auction; Participating in the Last Man Standing Game with some fantastic prizes going to the winners; Taking part in the Raffle Drawing for generous gift-certificate prizes as well as an assortment of guns.
For the crescendo of the evening, Auctioneer, Todd Krenek will present the Live Auction with a wide variety of high-ticket items. The Lions were reminded that it takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a community to support our wonderful library. As part of the community, you can purchase Raffle tickets ($20) and Dinner tickets ($15) from any Friends of the Library or Library Board of Directors members, or at the Eula and David Wintermann Library.
