Weimar ISD’s Maupin named coach of the year

Roger Maupin’s legacy is very well known within the Weimar Sports Community for his legendary accomplishments, and it just got bigger.

Maupin was named the Nation Federation of State High School Association Coach of the Year and looking at his resumé it is easy to see why.

Maupin has been coaching at Weimar Independant School district for the last 20 years and in that time, he made big impacts across multiple sports.

Maupin moved to Weimar in 2001 and is coaching junior high volleyball and basketball while being the high school softball team’s head coach. Maupin has accumulated over 500 wins in his time as the head softball coach, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Maupin has had a ton of regular season success, but it is his ability to win in the playoffs that has elevated his status as a coach. To win a playoff game is challenging enough for any team in any round.

So to be able to be a part of the final eight teams battling for a State Title is fairly difficult. Teams have to go through three rounds of playoffs against quality ball clubs and the kicker is each round is a three games series in order to advance.

It is no easy task but even with the degree of difficulty being so high, Maupin has accomplished this feat 13 times in his 20-year career. Maupin did not stop there though because while it is admirable to make it to the final eight it is even more admirable to hoist the State Championship trophy.

Maupin has seven State Championship game appearances to his name and in those seven opportunities, Maupin came away with a winning record. Maupin and the Ladycats have a 4-3 record in State Championship games which all but solidifies Maupin’s legacy in the Weimar.

The Ladycats have six State Championships to their name with the most recent coming in 2023.

Maupin still has gas left in the tank though and is not ready to hang up the whistle just yet as he looks forward to the 2025 season on the softball diamond.
