Wildcats looking to return to the playoffs

Wildcats looking to return to the playoffs

The Weimar Wildcats had a strong showing last season finishing with a 10-3 overall record and a 4-2 district record earning them a spot in the playoffs.

They beat Junction 55-0 in round one and La Villa 28-6 before falling short in round three to Refugio 4214.

The Wildcats are hungry for more and want to make an even deeper run in the playoffs this season. They have plenty of returning players and tons of talent for fans to get excited about.

Huxton Kloesel, Zach Norrell, Drew Montgomery and Jerron Fisher make up most of the skill positions returning to the Wildcats. These four are always in the mix for the Wildcats with Norell leading the charge with 1,498 scrimmage yards and 17 total touchdowns in 2023. Kloesel was under center for the Wildcats and threw for 517 yards and six touchdowns last season. Fisher was also a top target for Kloesel racking up receiving yards, but he also made an impact in the ground game rushing for 463 yards and five touchdowns.

Looking at the stats it is easy to see that this team loves to run the football and there is no indication that they are going to stray too far from that game plan in 2024. Fisher and Norrell are going to be key features in the run game and will continue to produce for the Wildcats and it’s their lineman that will help them do it.

Juan Hernandez, Brandon Luckey, Koda Pantalion, Cullen Schimcek and Kaden Zinnante are going to be the men upfront creating space for the run game. These guys have been working their tails off in the offseason to get stronger and more agile.

They are going to elevate the Wildcats play and some share a similar outlook. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine has the Wildcats finishing in second place this season and thinks their defense is going to be the big story.

The Wildcats defense was a big part of the team’s success last year with the team losing only three games in the regular season. The Wildcats defense was even more impressive in the playoffs giving up only six points through only two rounds.

They have a lot of returning players on the defensive side of the ball and Dave Campbell even gives the nod to Norrell as the Preseason Defensive MVP. Norrell plays a big role in the offense but will be looking to also cause havoc for opposing quarterbacks as a defensive back for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats will start their season on Friday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Boling to kick off their season.
