Columbus makes a big-time addition

Columbus makes a big-time addition

The Columbus Cardinals are currently ranked second in the state for Class 3A, and they just got better.

The Cardinals have officially added the reigning Six-Man Football Player of the Year Grayson Rigdon to their roster.

Rigdon played for Strawn and Benjamin High School, leading both teams to three consecutive State Championships in 1A Division II. Rigdon’s latest feat saw him lead Benjamin to back-to-back State Championships including one in 2023 before making the decision to make the jump to 11-man football in his senior season at Columbus.

Rigdon recorded 293 yards and nine touchdowns in the 2023 State Championship. In the two State Championship wins, Rigdon played for Benjamin, setting a school record by scoring 17 touchdowns in those two games.

Rigdon’s resume gets even more impressive by being named State Championship game MVP fourtimes and won the honor for offense and defense in his freshman year at Strawn.

In addition to adding Rigdon to the roster, Columbus is also bringing in Rigdon’s father, Jamie Rigdon, to join the Cardinals coaching staff. Jamie has five State Championships to his name as an assistant coach at Richland Springs, Strawn and Benjamin.

There is already a lot of hype around the Cardinals season this year with it being Adam Schobel’s senior season. The excitement and support for the Oklahoma State commit around the community is in full swing and Schobel himself is looking to make a big impact in his senior year.

But now they have even more reason to be excited because the Cardinals are adding a very viable weapon for Schobel to utilize throughout the season. Rigdon, who is an Air Force commit in his own right, is also looking to make a splash in his senior season.

The duo of Schobel and Rigdon will get a chance to work together on the field when practice opens on August 5, where they will hit the ground running working on their chemistry together.
