BY ABENEZER YONAS
Greetings Colorado County Citizens! My name is Abenezer Yonas, your new Managing Editor. I am so happy to have been blessed with this opportunity to work in this community and hope to fill Trenton’s shoes. He is a tall guy so it will be a tough job.
In all seriousness, if you missed the announcement last week, I just wanted to personally introduce myself to you all. I know I will get to learn more about each of you, so why not learn a little bit about myself?
I was born and raised in Houston in the Alief suburbs to Ethiopian parents (Ethiopia is an East African country, think about the “horn” of Africa). I grew up loving writing in all avenues, and eventually fell in love with journalism as well. I attended and graduated Alief Kerr High School in June 2018.
Following high school, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Houston where I graduated in June 2022, meeting Trenton along the way.
I started my journalistic career in May 2023 at the Sealy News as a General Assignment Reporter. Fast forward another year and now I am here! If it were not for Trenton, I would never have gotten that first position or moved on to where I am now. He truly has been a great friend and mentor and will do fantastically in his future endeavors.
Some of my hobbies include playing and watching soccer, spending time with my girlfriend, traveling, making music and cooking. Even though my name is Abenezer, all my friends and family call me Abey.
Within my brief time so far at the Citizen already, I have noticed how residents will wave at all cars that pass by, which I find to be so sweet. If you see me on the street do not hesitate to say hi, I am happy to be a Citizen!
