Columbus combine for a 30-3 record in Summer League

The Columbus Cardinals competed in the Schulenberg summer hoops league and finished with a combined record of 30-3.

The Cardinals varsity team went 11-0 and were crowned tournament champs, the junior varsity also went undefeated with a 12-0 record and were also crowned tournament champs and the freshman team posted a 7-3 record in the tournament.

Columbus is coming off basketball season where they just barely missed the playoffs. They came into this summer tournament with a chip on their shoulder to show that they can be a playoff caliber team and string wins together.

Columbus missed the playoffs last season by only one game, probably closer to only half a game, but that is all in the past. They needed to make a big impact at this tournament, and they did.

To lose only three games with three teams in action is a very positive sign for a team looking to build on last season’s momentum. Columbus matched up with the likes of Sealy, Hallettsville, Weimar, Schulenberg, East Bernard and Fayetteville.

Columbus even had games where their JV team played their freshman team in an iron-sharpens-iron matchup. Regardless Columbus played nothing but quality basketball clubs in this summer league and came out the other side as champions with two of their teams.

This gives Columbus basketball fans a big reason to be excited for the upcoming season. Columbus wants to progress in their journey as a team trying to reach the top of the mountain and making the playoffs is the next step.

Being able to not only win the tournament but completely and utterly dominate gives this group a little extra confidence as the summer rolls on. This tournament is a sign of things to come for Columbus basketball.
