The Columbus Lady Cardinals Head Volleyball coach Kayley Johns was selected to coach the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star game in Arlington on Wednesday, June 26.
Johns led her team of All-Stars to a win in three sets with identical scores of 25-22 in all three sets.
Johns was the obvious choice to coach this team and the decision to make her the coach is further supported by the numbers from her team this year. The Lady Cardinals played 49 games this season and they won 43 of those 49 games.
Johns led the Lady Cards to great heights and a truly impressive record from behind the clipboard and took on all challengers. Not only did they have a good overall record for the season, but Johns and the Lady Cards took it a step further by having a perfect 14- 0 district record.
Johns led her team into the playoffs with all the confidence in the world in her group, she never gave up on them at any point of the season and the players responded to that. The players knew their biggest supporter was Johns and that allowed them to play with more confidence and swagger.
With all the momentum on their side the Lady Cards mowed through the competition in the playoffs and made it all the way to the Semi-Final round where they were eliminated by Gunter. Johns wore her emotions on her sleeve as tears rolled down her face and her heart broke for her players.
Though it was an emot iona l loss, her passion for the game and her team did not go unnoticed. TGCA saw a coach that poured her heart and soul into the game of volleyball and her team and then made the decision to have Johns coach in the All-Star game.
An obvious decision, and some would say it was an easy pick, but there is no denying that Johns was right for the job, and it was a wel ldeserved honor for the Columbus coach.
