In small towns across America there are people quietly reaching out to their neighbors, offering help, companionship and congenial gatherings. It is no different in Columbus, where there are many such folks! Highlighted here are members of a group who bring smiles, activities and friendship to residents in all three senior care facilities in town each month.
Aptly named, Senior Smiles, is a project of the Columbus Christian Women’s Organization, with a mission of providing joy, companionship and cognitive programs to the residents.
Starting with 5 original members, they now count 10 regular participants who take time to prepare meaningful and enjoyable activities for the seniors. “The smiles, hugs and statements about how much they love the group’s visits, make all the hard work and preparation worth it!” says, Alice Berry, leader of Senior Smiles.
Alice also points out there are many other locals who contribute to their work, including CCWO members who bake, assist with sewing projects, decorate seasonal cards and participate in sing-alongs. She sends special thanks to Sandy Carr, at the Columbus Sewing Lab and her volunteers who make their gift ideas a reality.
