Commissioners talk budget, new positions

COLUMBUS – The recent city council meeting on June 24 saw the council members award a few bids for improvements around the city. They also discussed their cyber security insurance and made a few actions regarding a community development block grant.

City Manager Donald Warschak gave his report that featured some plans for improvements throughout the city. He detailed that the city finished installing the pickle ball court at Midtown Park and the playground equipment is still scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks.

Warschak also reported that the contractors in charge of the overlay project on S.H. 71 and U.S. 90 would begin sometime after the Fourth of July.

The city accepted a few bids for street improvements and gas line improvements within city limits. H&C Construction was bid chosen for the street improvement project with a proposed cost of $133,400. B&E Services, Inc. Won the bid to improve the gas line system with a projected cost of $187,761.

The council discussed the raise in cyber security insurance premiums as the city is involved in an interlocal agreement that includes several other municipalities. It accounted for over $1,000 in increased premiums, but member cities pay an amount equitable to their use and risk.

Constable Richard Lacourse introduced a new Assistant Code Enforcement official, Cody Nance, who had previously been employed with the Elections Office.

In other news, the fire department has their fire extinguisher system up and running at the department, and should have the necessary sensors and alert system in place this week.

April was designated as Fair Housing Month in Columbus with a resolution from the council. Also, city secretary Bana Schneider was given the designation as the employee to confirm the tax rates calculated by the Central Appraisal District.

City council will return to session on July 8.
