Cardinals place 7th in Lone Star Cup

Cardinals place 7th in Lone Star Cup

The Columbus Cardinals finished their 2023-24 athletic season by coming in 7th place in the Lone Star Cup.

The Lone Star Cup is a UIL program that recognizes six schools, one in each classification 1A-6A, based on their overall team achievement in multiple different sanctioned UIL Academic/Athletic/ Music championships.

Points are awarded based on the team’s performance, so the better they do, the more points they get. For example, the Columbus Lady Cardinals volleyball team was undefeated in district play and made it all the way to the semi-final game before being eliminated.

They earned four points for being district champs and making it to the playoffs. They earned two points each for the five wins they picked up throughout the playoffs giving Columbus a 14-point boost in the Lone Star Cup standings.

Columbus had great seasons across the board in almost every sport, essentially each team making the playoffs in their respective sport. Once in the playoffs Columbus made several deep pushes which helped their standing in the Lone Star cup.

They finished with a total of 59 points, which was only 11 points away from being int he top five. Columbus is only losing a handful of seniors on the athletic front and while their presence will be missed the Cardinals are hungry to jump into the 2024-25 season and try to win a few State Championships and make another strong bid for the Lone Star Cup.
