COLUMBUS – City Manager Donald Warschak gave a packed report at the June 10 city council meeting.
Warschak gave several TxDOT updates as the department continued their projects in city limits. He reported that the TxDOT project to overlay U.S. 90 and S.H. 71 will begin sometime this month, and that the I-10 expansion project will begin on the main lane roads by the end of this year.
Other road projects are being considered as well. The area west of Milam Street, east of Fannin Street and North of Walnut Street is scheduled to receive 46,000 square yards of sealcoat. The city is seeking bids before awarding the project before the council’s next meeting.
Another project out for bid is a gas line project that will replace over 3,000 of 2 in. steel pipes with HDPE pipe. The project will be completed on North Oak Drive, Colorado Drive, Crestview Drive, Burford Street, Riverbend Drive and Short River Drive.
The waterlines are also a topic to be addressed soon as the project design is completed. After a document review by Grant-Works, the city will be ready to send the project out for bidding to replace 5,600 linear feet of 6 in. water lines.
In other news, contractors finished their construction of pickleball courts at Midtown Park. The new playground equipment has been ordered and will arrive in the coming weeks.
The council also discussed potential regulations on drone use in the city. However, due to state code, the city is prohibited from creating any ordinance concerning drones. It could potentially become a matter for law enforcement if illegal drone surveillance is done on individuals or private property.
