CCWMA announces 2024 scholarship awards

The Colorado County Wildlife Management Association is pleased to announce the 2024 CCWMA Scholarship recipients. This year $10,000 of scholarship funds was awarded to five recipients. They are Alley Fitzgerald and Clay Kohleffel of Columbus High School, Marlena Nunn of Rice High School, Hannah Fisbeck of Weimar High School, and Cooper Mau Fayetteville ISD. Congratulations to each of them and best of luck to them in pursuit of their academic dreams.

CCWMA raises scholarship money principally from the sales of raffle tickets drawn at the Spring Banquet. This year’s banquet was held March 16 at Columbus KC Hall. The banquet was well attended with prizes awarded to the winners of the CCWMA Big Buck Contest.

Prizes were also awarded for deer trophy mounts and wi ldlife photography. And of course, there were many winners of the bucket raffles and the Big Raffle. This year’s guest speaker was Blaise Korzekwa, Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. Whitetail Deer Program Leader who spoke on the topic “Does Culling Actually Improve Deer Quality”.

CCWMA consists of the six Wildlife Management Associations in Colorado County. The WMA’s are Harvey Creek WMA, Sandy Creek WMA, Central Colorado County WMA, Oakridge Ranch WMA, Colorado River WMA, and Northeast Colorado County WMA.

Since 2002, when CCWMA began awarding scholarships, over $166,000 of scholarship funds has been awarded to over 128 Colorado County youth. Each of the three high schools in the County, Columbus, Weimar, and Rice High Schools receive at least one scholarship.
