Katy Elementary 4th Graders Experience Texas’ Past

Katy Elementary 4th Graders Experience Texas’ Past

As culmination to their study of Texas history, and a fun treat, Katy Elementary 4th graders welcomed Kathleen Townzen and Donna Pustejovsky as they presented the Texas Pioneer Life Trunk Show. These ladies, representing the Columbus chapter Dilue Rose Harris of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, dress in period clothing and provide this demonstration for local 4th grade classes.

The trunk is full of replicas that would be found in Texas pioneer homes from the early 1800s. Included are maps, Texas Republic currency, household items, toys, clothing, etc.

Students get to demonstrate, touch, examine, and play with all the artifacts. The children compare items used in their daily lives to those used by early Texas settlers.

These 4th graders gain an appreciation of what they have and an awareness of the hard work and sacrifice of our forefathers as they established the land.

For more information on the DRT, please visit the website at www.drtinfo. org or the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter Facebook page. Any woman interested in becoming a full or associate member of the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter in Columbus may contact Marilyn Wade at [email protected].
