WEIMAR — After travelling nearly 7,000 miles, the purple martin will arrive at residents' backyards soon.
The Friends of the Weimar Public Library is hosting a “Purple Martins 101” program with Bert and Jean Stipelcovich at the Weimar Public Library, 1 Jackson Square, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.
The program will feature the purple martin, its history, its importance, and active ways residents can attract the bird to their backyards.
Program presenters Bert and Jean Stipelcovich, will also provide information on ways to become involved with the species and interesting facts about the birds that migrate to the area yearly.
According to a release, Bert Stielcovich is a Texas Master Naturalist and is the Information Technology Director for the Coastal Prairie Chapter. He and his wife, Jean, provide programs on the purple martin to major conference groups in Texas.
The Stielcovichs are originally from New Orleans and resided in Sugar Land before moving to the Weimar area, according to a release. They have been passionate advocates for the purple martin and will present facts and answer questions about the species.
