Ladycats eliminated by District Rivals

Ladycats eliminated by District Rivals

The Weimar Ladycats were the defending champions in 2A softball after winning the State Championship last season.

Unfortunately, there will be a new champion this year because the Ladycats were eliminated by the Shiner Lady Comanches.

Being eliminated from the playoffs always stings but this one stings a little more because they were eliminated by a district rival. These two teams always put on a show when they matchup against one another and this time was no different.

Now that the games meant that one of them could be sent home if they lost it gave both teams that extra bit of motivation and aggression to come and play their best ball in the Regional Finals.

In game one the Ladycats found themselves down 1-0 but quickly got the lead back but as quickly as they got the lead, they lost it. Shiner wanted every bit of the Ladycats and took a ton of heavy blows from the Ladycats and kept coming back for more.

Shiner played fearless and aggressive in game one and sent the Ladycats home with a 7-3 loss. The Ladycats now had to live with the reality that their season was at stake and they needed that win obviously to keep their season alive but to show that they weren’t going anywhere.

Shiner again came out firing on all cylinders and scored seven runs in four innings while keeping the Ladycats scoreless. The Ladycats finally broke through in the fifth inning where they scored two runs to cut into Shiner’s lead.

But it was not enough, and Shiner added one more run to have a final score of 8-2.

The Ladycats leaned heavily on their seniors Izzy Reeves, Hannah Fisbeck, Chloe Grifaldo and Ashley Treece to help navigate these high-stakes games and it was a role these seniors took pride in.

The seniors played their roles beautifully, but this was nothing new to them, they were always leading the way and keeping this team steady. The Ladycats listened to their seniors when they talked, and they were able to forge a bond that was inseparable.

Coming off a championship season it can be hard to get over the championship hangover, but the Ladycats were able to manage because of their senior leadership. The Ladycats seniors showed what it was like to share success as a team and the underclassmen took note.

While the Ladycats are losing Reeves, Fisbeck, Grifaldo and Treece they are leaving the program better than they found it, and that is something Weimar High School is grateful for.

Senior Hannah Fisbeck’s leadership along with the other seniors were a vital part fo the Ladycats success this season.
