What a run

The Huddle

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Huddle and if you have read all the other stories before this one you will understand the title a little bit better.

Here in Colorado County, we had three teams remaining in the playoffs, two in the Regional Finals and one in the Regional Semi-Finals.

All three of those teams were eliminated from the playoffs this past week which ends our High School Sports coverage for the year. Just High School though, we have plenty of sports here in Colorado County to keep you guys infirmed about but I wanted to look bakc at what these teams accomplished this season.

I will focus on Columbus’ soft and baseball teams and the Weimar softball team because they did many good things that I want to discuss with you guys.

Everyone ready? Awesome!

So, starting things off I want to tip my cap to the Weimar Ladycats. After hearing they won the State Championship last season, I was skeptical about how they would play this season.

I fully expected a championship hangover and for them to have a middle-of-the-road season. I was pleasantly surprised when they made, they dominated district play and was even more surprised to see how this team operated.

Like I mentioned in the story they leaned heavily on their seniors and my goodness they did an immaculate job leading that team. The Ladycats seniors did everything they needed to do to help this team win and made every single sacrifice to do it.

They got bumps and bruises and made several hard plays throughout the season, but it was all worth it. That style of play is infectious and can inspire any way to bring their absolute best to the table.

The seniors on this team showed they knew what it takes to win these games late in the season, and that’s not something you can coach, it’s something that is inside every athlete. So, while I thought it was going to be a championship hangover that defined this team’s season, I am very happy to say that I was wrong because it was the Championship DNA.

Now looking to Columbus both their soft and baseball teams followed a similar track this season.

They both had excellent pitchers paired with active bats up and down their line up. James Janak, Karlee Mathis, Kaleb Kuhn, Mia Post and Allie Cranek dominated the pitching position for the red and white this season.

They helped stabilize a lot of games when the offense needed to sort itself out but when the offense did, teams could not stop them. Up and down the lineup for both teams in Columbus they had someone who was a threat at the plate.

Teams had to work around the Columbus offenses, and late in the playoffs, teams were good at keeping teams off the bases, and Columbus could not get over that hump.

Despite this, they turned a lot of heads and put themselves on the map heading into 2025. All three of these teams deserve their flowers for what they did this season because they worked their tails off and earned everything, they won this season.
