The Weimar Vets traveled to New Ulm to take on the Fireman for the first game of the Community League 2024 opener.
Kannyn Goehring doubled in the second, driving in two runs to take the early lead.
New Ulm countered with five runs of their own to take the lead.
The Vets tacked on a run in the third before having a four-run fifth inning where the Vets took the lead for good. They added runs in the seventh and ninth while the Firemen added just a lone run in the eighth for a final score of 10-6 in a Vets win.
Mason Lampe started the game with a shutout in the first inning. Despite a shaky second inning, he went on to throw five shutout innings, recording 13 strikeouts and walking just a single batter. He stranded seven base runners to earn the win.
Cody Barrett pitched the last two innings, striking out six to record the save.
Defensive standouts were Brett Janacek who caught the whole game and gunned down a few runners at second, and the Goehring brothers who solidified the outfield in right and left. Alex Angerstein had a strong game at shortstop.
Leading the offense were Kannyn Goehring with a walk, a double, a single and 2 RBI; Brett Janacek with two stolen bases, a single 2 RBI and three runs scored; Mason Lampe with a single, RBI, 2 hit-by-pitch bases and two walks; Ryker Goehring with four walks, two runs scored and two RBI; Alex Angerstein with an RBI, a single, two stolen bases and a run scored; Clay Barton with a run scored and two stolen bases; and Trey Daniels who was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
