London eliminates Columbus

The Columbus Cardinals were eliminated by the London Pirates in the Regional Semi-final round of the playoffs.

The Cards were swept by the Pirates and like the Columbus Lady Cardinals their offense also struggled.

Vs. London, 13-4, L

In game of the series the Cardinals got caught asleep at the wheel.

The Pirates wasted no time getting things started in game number one. They scored eight runs through two innings of play and the Cards and no answer for them.

Pitching was a strength of the Cardinals all season long but in game one, they gave up 13 runs on 12 hits while walking seven batters and striking out four. The Pirates’ offense had a very productive day in the batter’s box, so the Cardinals looked to their offense to provide a spark.

The Cardinals’ offense scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Pirates lead down to 8-3. The Cards were looking to build on that multi run inning, but the Pirates slammed the door in their face.

The Cards scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pirates added five more runs to their lead. The game ended with a final score of 13-4 and with their season on the line the Cards knew they needed to bounce back sooner rather than later.

@ Pirates, 3-0, L

In game two the Cards defense stood tall and did not allow the Pirates to run away with the game early to their benefit. The Cards gave themselves more opportunity to settle into the game but again their offense struggled to get going.

The Cards were shut out in game number two, and they only recorded three hits in the game. Without runners on base, they limit themselves as far as scoring opportunities go and when playing a talented team like the Pirates, they will find a way to break through eventually.

The Pirates scored twice in the second inning and once more in the fourth inning to reach the final score of 3-0. Pitching wise the Cards allowed three runs on four hits while recording eight strikeouts in six innings of play.

Unfortunately, though, the offense just could not get their footing and they were sent home in the Regional Semi-Finals.

The Cards season is now over on the baseball diamond but with an end comes a beginning and with new beginning there is new opportunity, opportunity that the Cards are excited to pounce on next season.
