The Texas Department of Transportation released another update of their I-10 expansion project that included the reopening of the frontage road going eastbound.
On Thursday, May 23, the contractor reopened the eastbound frontage road between County Road 92 and Bernardo Road. The frontage road is now open to two-way traffic from Bernardo Road to FM 949 according to TxDOT.
After that section opened, the contractor moved their attention to the westbound frontage road on the other side of the highway. That road will be closed to traffic in the same area from County Road 92 to Bernardo Road. The construction includes a replacement bridge at Willow Creek, and the roadway will remain closed until the bridge construction has been completed.
While this section of the westbound frontage road will be closed to highway traffic, local traffic can still use the road up to Willow Creek. Highway traffic will be redirected to the completed eastbound frontage road.
The reconstruction of the frontage roads that run alongside the highway are the first steps of a 5-year projected plan to widen and add more lanes to I-10. The frontage roads will be the detour so traffic can flow as close to normal as possible while the construction happens on the highway.
The frontage roads will both be open to two-way traffic, but they are referred to as east or westbound according to which side of I-10 the frontage road runs along.
Some of the next projected projects include: ∙ A traffic switch from the Eastbound main lane to the westbound main lane inside shoulder between County Road 92 and FM 949 on May 31.
∙ Reopening of County Road 92 North feeder to the recently opened I-10 eastbound frontage road by the end of May or first week of June.
∙ A traffic switch from the eastbound main lane to the westbound main lane inside shoulder between Bernardo Road to the end of the construction area, scheduled to begin June 6.
∙ Westbound main lane traffic switches to the outside shoulder from the beginning of the construction area to FM 102, scheduled to begin June 12.
∙ Eastbound frontage road at 1344 to open sometime in mid-July.
