Lady Cards make history

Lady Cards make history

The Columbus Lady Cardinals are making their way to the Regional Finals being the first Lady Card team ever to reach this round, after sweeping the Lyford Lady Bulldogs in a three-game series.

The Lady Cards gave up only two runs between the two games and now set their sights on a different prize.

@ Lyford, W, 4-2 Game one was a low scoring contest for both teams, so it came down to a matter of defense and the Lady Cards had plenty of that.

Karlee Mathis was in the circle for the Lady Cards, and she racked up six strikeouts through seven innings of play. She did give up two runs on four hits but luckily the offense was starting to find their rhythm.

Offensively they were led by Allie Cranek, Mathis and Mia Post who all hit doubles in the contest and were a big part of the third inning surge.

After tying the game at one run each in the second inning the Lady Cards came back in the third inning with vengeance. They scored three runs in the third inning to put all the pressure back on Lyford.

Lyford managed to score one more run after the Lady Cards’ offensive explosion in the third. But they were unable to mount a full comeback and the Lady Cards took game one.

Vs. Lyford, W, 3-0 Game two provided a little bit more plot for all the drama fans out there. It was a scoreless game until the bottom of this sixth inning.

Post and Cranek handled pitching duties for the Lady Cards combining for four strikeouts while giving up seven hits but zero runs. The Lady Cards managed the game very well on defense and never let things get out of hand.

They stayed calm, cool and collected and made the plays that came to them. In a tight game like this one, the slightest mistake would have cost them the game, so they were focused and on point defensively.

Offensively they needed to find their footing like they did in game one. They were able to score all three runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to some timely hitting from Mathis, Molly Garcia, Ellie Brown and Post.

The Lady Cards now set their sights on the Regional Finals but are chomping at the bit to get the big prize at the top of the mountain.
