12 athletes sign in Columbus

12 athletes sign in Columbus

Marley Giddens Gym was busy this week as it hosted a signing day for 12 of Columbus High School to put pen to paper and begin their college athletic career on Tuesday, May 14.

The athletes were Jackson Hancock, Ezra Hill, Anthony Jackson, James Janak, Claire Klausmeyer, Kaleb Kuhn, Karlee Mathis, Christian Reyna, Haylie Roberts, Jayden Trapp, Harlee Weido and Ty’Vone Whitehead.

The bleachers were packed with classmates, family and friends for this exciting moment in these young athletes’ careers. The ceremony started with Hancock who will be continuing his football career at The University of Incarnate World.

Hancock was a very viable option for Adam Schobel this year and despite his smaller frame Hancock’s speed is what made him a threat. The University of Incarnate World will be looking to use that to their benefit as they are excited to see him on campus this fall.

Next were two more football players, Hill and Jackson. Hill signed to East Texas Baptist University while Jackson is heading to Blinn College. Much like Hancock these two were extremely valuable to the Cardinals success this season on the football field.

They worked diligently with their coaches to make sure they put the best possible film they could out there and now they are on their way to playing college ball.

Next was Klausmeyer, who will be attending Wharton Junior College.

Klausmeyer signed on to join their volleyball team and man are they getting a solid defender.

Throughout the volleyball season a lot of the shine was on Ally Tribe because she was just so dominate in every game they played. But Klausmeyer is a big reason why Tribe was able to get those looks in the first place.

Klausmeyer patrolled the net for the Lady Cards and if any ball came her way, she rose up with her arms outstretched and shut down any hopes of a spike. She kept points alive a lot of the time for the Lady Cards and is something she’ll do for Wharton Junior College as well.

Next were the softball and baseball players consisting of Mathis, Janak and Kuhn. Mathis is just a great dual threat on the softball field and will be able showcase her talents even further at Concordia University.

As for Janak and Kuhn, the Bash brothers, these guys completely dominated the district from the bump on the baseball field. If it was Kuhn throwing a 16 strike out no hitter or Janak striking out 12 batters’ while giving up zero runs, the Cards were in good hands.

Janak will continue playing at Sam Houston State while Kuhn is headed to Northeast Texas Community College.

Roberts and Weido were the lone cheerleaders in the mix but much like the rest they contributed greatly to their sport, enough to get offered a scholarship to a college. Roberts will be attending Cisco Junior College while Weido will be attending Blinn College where they will be bringing the school spirit.

Lastly is a trip of football players which were Reyna, Trapp and Whitehead. Reyna will be heading to Texas Lutheran University with Trapp and Whitehead both going to Texas A&M Kingsville.

Reyna’s senior season may not have gone as planned but he still finds himself being offered a spot at the college level which must be a great feeling. Then there’s Whitehead and Trapp who did not get enough satisfaction dominating the run game at the high school level so now they will do it at the college level.

Congratulations to these young athletes and good luck as they begin their college careers.
