Weimar Lions host Habitat for Humanity

At the most recent quarterly District meeting, which encompasses an area stretching from College Station to Gonzales and Navasota to Bastrop, the Weimar Lions club was presented the Robert Koennecke Award for Service. This award is given annually to the club which best exemplifies the motto of “WE SERVE” in their respective communities. 1st Vice District Governor Julius Bartek, on right, presents the award to Mark Dannemiller, club Secretary and Service Manager at the latest meeting in Weimar.

Representatives from the Colorado County Habitat for Humanity, Executive Director Charmaine Katz and Columbus Lion Steve McCullough, met with the Weimar Lions Club over lunch on Tuesday May 7th. This local organization will build their 31st house in Weimar on East Post Office St in the fall. The new build program, led by Mr. Mc-Cullough, constructs for approved applicants that meet income requirements. New owners must contribute at least 200 hours of sweat equity to their home. We have 4 HFH homes already in Weimar. The CCHFH typically constructs 2 houses per year.

A relatively new focus of the organization is the Critical Home Repairs Program, led by Ms. Katz.

This is dedicated to existing Senior Citizen housing and making repairs that allow residents to safely age in place and remain in their home. While the new construction program receives mortgage payments to help build the next house, the critical home repairs program relies on donations, grants and financial support as recipients receive services at no cost. The Weimar Lions made a donation to support this effort.
