Friends of the Weimar Library hosting summer events

The Weimar Public Library will offer a free chess class and a free Hapkido class this summer. The classes are backto- back with a 30-minute lunch time in between to better facilitate parents’ schedules.

Chess master, David Mc-Call, returns to the Weimar Public Library this summer to teach new students, advise returning students, and build the skills of competing chess players.

Chess classes will be offered to all ages beginning May 28. Classes will meet every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

McCall has offered his services as an instructor free of charge for the past three years at both the library and at St. Michael School because McCall, a former educator and counselor, believes in the many benefits of chess, like improvement in memory, concentration, and problem- solving. He promotes the game as a wonderful way for parents and children to bond.

Those who attend Mc-Call’s classes will learn all the rules of the game, including special moves, tactics and strategies, and many more secrets of chess all offered in a simple, easy to understand, straight-forward manner.

McCall meets each student at his or her level and proceeds with each individually and at his own pace, encouraging competition between beginner and skilled players.

The first lesson in Mc-Call’s beginner class is intended for anyone who knows very little about the game of chess, learning about the pieces and simple strategies to win. For further information or to register for the class, call the Weimar Public Library at 979-725-6608.

A free Hapkido class will be offered by Friends of the Weimar Public Library.

Hapkido, a soft form of martial arts, will be offered at the Weimar Public Library beginning Tuesday, May 28 from 11:30 a.m. until noon.

Instructor David McCall has been teaching martial arts since 1986. He holds a black belt ranking in Taekwon- Do, Moo Duk Kwan, and Hapkido.

The Hapkido summer camp will focus on escapes from various grabs.

McCall will be offering this class following the chess class he will teach from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Those attending both programs may bring a lunch for the break between the two classes.

Please call the Weimar Public Library at 979-7256608 to register.

Please check the Weimar Public Library Facebook page for a monthly calendar of events to register for upcoming programs.
