Ladycats crowned Area Champs

Ladycats crowned Area Champs

The Weimar Ladycats continue to claw their way through the playoffs as they captured the Area Championship on Thursday, May 2.

The Ladycats defeated the Woodsboro Lady Eagles 10-0 to win the Area Championship and they received massive contributions from several players.

The Ladycats were the home team against the Lady Eagles, and they took full advantage of that fact. The Ladycats’ defense was stellar as always but their pitching really shined with the Area Championship on the line.

Taylor Smith walked one batter in the second inning and it was the only blemish on her defensive stat line. Smith faced 18 batters through five innings of play, she struck out 11 of those batters she faced.

Smith never gave the Lady Eagles a chance to even think about building momentum because she was that good in the circle for the Ladycats. When the Lady Eagles did make contact with the ball the defense behind Smith made no mistakes and kept runners off the bases.

This led to the Ladycats’ offense having an outstanding day.

They started the game hot in the first inning where they scored four runs, added two more runs in the second, then had their third multirun inning in the fifth inning, extending their lead with three more runs.

While Smith commanded the field while she was in the circle, she also showcased her offensive ability. In addition to her stellar performance in the circle Smith also recorded a double in the game, which was impressive, but her teammates also showcased their offensive talents as well.

Tate Griffin also recorded a double in the game but she, along with Izzy Reeves, recorded home runs in the Area Championship game. Ashley Treece also chipped in offensively because she hit the game’s only triple and had three RBIs at the end of the game.

The Ladycats will get to face a familiar foe in the Regional Semi-Finals as they are scheduled to face Ganado in round three. Game one is scheduled for Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at Cuero High School.

Taylor Smith struck out 11 batters in the Area Championship game.
