Lady Cards win area championship

Lady Cards win area championship

The Columbus Lady Cardinals continue to push through the playoffs after winning the Area Championship.

The Lady Cards defeated Cotulla Cowgirls in a best of three games series to win the Area Championship.

Game one for the Lady Cards was a tight game for both teams as neither defense allowed any sort of offense for most of the game. The Lady Cards defense was led by Karlee Mathis who gave up only two hits while striking out nine batters in seven innings.

Mathis and the defense kept the Cowgirls from getting on base and off the scoreboard which allowed their offense to take their time settle into the game. The Lady Cards offense broke through in the fourth inning where they scored the opening run.

In the sixth inning the Lady Cards added two more runs to extend their lead to 3-0, which was also the final score, and then closed out the game on defense.

Ellie Brown, Taylor Morrow and Mathis each chipped in majorly on offense with Brown hitting a double and Morrow and Mathis each hitting a triple. This set their offense up to come out firing on all cylinders in game two.

The Lady Cards won game two 10-4 and were crowed Area Champs, but the Cowgirls came out with a little more fire too.

The Lady Cards scored six runs in the first and second innings, but the Cowgirls scored four by the time the third inning ended. With a two-run lead and four innings left in the game the Lady Cards knew they would have to tighten up defensively and they did.

Mia Post was in the circle for the Lady Cards and was aided by Peyton Drozd, who came in relief in the sixth and seventh innings. Combined they allowed four runs on six hits but they struck out nine batters in seven innings with Post recording seven of those nine strikeouts.

Offensively Mathis and Morrow again had the big bats but Post also joined in on the action, Mathis and Post each hit a double, while Morrow followed up her double in game one with a triple in game two.

The Lady Cards took care of business in the Area round and now look ahead to the Regional Semi-Final where they will face Jourdanton with a chance to play for another championship on the line.
