What do you give... time, money, leadership?

A View Of Columbus Through Rose-Colored Glasses

This column is dedicated to acknowledging examples of positives that express the community spirit of Columbus – our town.

Let’s look at your calendar. Are there many dates circled this month? Is there a date for graduation, a play-off game, a baby shower, or that garage sale that you are trying to plan? Here’s hoping the dates on your calendar include Magnolia Festival Days.

The plural “days” is because there are many volunteers who will work all day Friday in preparation for the big Saturday festival. There are tables and chairs to set up, there’s a beer garden to organize, and there’s a kid’s area with bouncy houses and a bucking bronc. Then we start on the food booths; lots of local clubs prepare great festival foods.

A major job is the coordination of the music. All of these and more require manpower. The Chamber Board will be the first to step up to the plate. Then, of course, the employees in the chamber office will have their role.

Now I hope that I have given you time to consider what you might volunteer for. Yes, we have a great volunteer cadre of citizens who have already volunteered for a place. If you are still available, please call Stacy in the Chamber Office at 979732-8385.

We acknowledge that many of these volunteers are just coming off serving for last week’s Coastal Conservation Association Banquet. I forgot to mention that Festival volunteers receive two shirts, a free meal, and a chance in the drawing for Astro tickets.

The festival benefits our town. Investing as a volunteer or sponsor is vital. Check the sponsor board and show your appreciation to those who have contributed. Morgan and Todd Barten receive a standing ovation. Their spirit of giving is a spirit of kindness. One’s opportunity for leadership comes often in a small town.

Remember the ways of giving – Time, sponsorship, leadership, volunteering, and I might add the giving of your talent.
