Cards split their final two games before playoffs begin

Cards split their final two games before playoffs begin

The Columbus Cardinals lost their final district game of the year to the Hallettsville Brahmas on Tuesday, April 23, but bounced back with a win over Caldwell on Friday, April 26.

The game against Caldwell was just a playoff warmup game for both teams but the Cardinals needed that win before embarking on their playoff journey.

The Cards started the week off with a 12-0 loss to Hallettsville and that loss stings for a few reasons. One reason being, the team is about to start playoffs, and no one wants to enter playoffs on a loss.

So, coming into the Caldwell game the Cards wanted to get back on track and try to enter the playoffs with their confidence high and a win in their back pocket.

The Cards struggled offensively in the game against Hallettsville, but on Friday the offense looked good as new. The Cards scored four runs in the top of the third inning to open the scoring in the game.

Once they opened the scoring in the game the Cards put their foot on the gas offensively. They added two more runs in the top of the fifth and allowed their defense to close the game out.

Trevor Berger and Trinity Thompson led the way for the offense with both players recording either a multiple base hit or a home run. Berger not only hit a home run, but he was responsible for all four runs in the third inning for the Cardinals because his home run was a Grand Slam.

Defensively the Cards did their job, they held Caldwell scoreless for two innings which allowed their offense to find home plate a little bit easier. The Cardinals’ defense was spear headed by their pitching where they were able to show some of their bull pen depth.

The Cards used four pitchers in the game against Caldwell and all of them performed well. As a group they gave up only one run on two hits all while striking out 13 batters.

Kaleb Kuhn led the charge for the Cardinals pitching wise claiming nine of those 13 strikeouts on Friday night.

With the regular season done and their playoff warm up game out of the way the Cardinals now lie in wait for whoever their first-round matchup may be.
