Crash at Schobel’s leaves visible mark

COLUMBUS – The corner of Schobel’s restaurant has a visible mark on it following a crash that left several first responders surrounding the building on April 24.

In the afternoon just after 3:30 p.m., a white Ford truck lost control on SH 71 and veered off into the building, leaving damage to the building and disrupting operations at the restaurant.

Officer Jose Lara investigated the incident for the Columbus Police Department.

Jack Boman, 55, was behind the wheel when the truck drove off the road and rolled into the building, damaging the building and a parked vehicle.

According to the crash report generated by the CPD, Boman reportedly looked down at his phone momentarily before losing control of the vehicle and striking a tree and the parked vehicle.

The damage included injuries to the driver, damage to landscaping, the parked vehicle, an electrical box attached to the building and the building itself. The total damage assessed was marked as over $1000 in the crash report.

Boman was taken to Columbus Community Hospital to be treated for his injuries. There was no reported influence of any substances involved in the incident.

The roadway was reported as cleared a little over an hour later as regular traffic returned.

Schobels was struck by a potentially distracted driver on Wednesday, April 24, leaving damage on the exterior wall of the building.
