Noise variance for events approved

COLUMBUS CITY COUNCIL

Donation to midtown park accepted

COLUMBUS — The Columbus City Council on April 22 highlighted several noise variances that were accepted for upcoming events. The council also highlighted a sizable donation to Midtown Park and heard reports of Columbus Volunteer Fire Department receiving their new engine.

Two upcoming events will be included as exceptions to the current noise ordinance in their respective areas. The Thunder by the Colorado event requested a noise ordinance exception for May 3 and May 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Magnolia Days Festival requested an exception from noon to 11 p.m. on May 17, and an exception from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on May 18.

City Manager Donald Warschak reported that the signal light on the intersection of Hwy 71 and U.S. 90 is just waiting for equipment to be cleaned and removed but is otherwise completed. Warschak also reported that the bottom of the public pool was painted and is ready to be filled with water. The new concrete overlay project on Hwy 71 and Walnut Street is still scheduled for mid-May but will not be before the Magnolia Days event.

The city accepted a $60,000 donation from Todd and Morgan Barten for improvements and additions to Midtown Park including a replacement playground set and a highly requested pickle ball court. Warschak discussed that there could be potential plans on a future budget to extend the basketball court and add a second hoop.

In Constable Richard LaCourse’s report for the fire marshal and code enforcement, he made the council aware that the CVFD received their new fire engine that is now in operation.

LaCourse gave an update on the Holiday Inn that suffered total water damage earlier in the year. The hotel cleared all electrical and structural code requirements, meaning it is ready for operation at any time. However, due to difficulties behind the scenes with insurance, the hotel has not gotten in operable condition as it is still missing replacement furniture according to LaCourse.

The next city council meeting will be on Monday, April 13 at the Columbus Municipal Court at 605 Spring St.
