Rubio leads high-scoring week for Lady Cards’ soccer

The Lady Cards varsity soccer team had a pair of strong performances last week as they snatched back-to-back district wins and extended their win streak to three games. Columbus had an explosive week offensively, finding the back of the net four times in each of their two competitions. Striker Karina Rubio had the most effective week of the bunch, scoring six of the team’s eight goals of the week. To pair with their strong offense, they also played with impressive defense as they held both of their opponents scoreless for their third clean sheet in a row.

Vs Wharton, W, 4-0

The Lady Cards continued their strong defense from their prior cleansheet victory against Calhoun. This time however, the Lady Cards got better results from their offense as they increased their scoring total from two goals to four against Wharton on Monday, Feb. 13. Both sides of the ball fit together nicely as they held an advantage over Wharton early on in the game. They expanded on the lead as the game progressed and took advantage of Wharton’s mistakes. Of those mistakes, their low point was an own goal in the first half that extended the Columbus lead.

Karina Rubio got the scoring started early with an opening goal within the first 10 minutes of the game. Wharton suffered their own goal later on in the half to give the Lady Cards a 2-0 advantage heading into the second half. The scoring continued in the second half as Aranza Ramirez knocked in a 20-yard free kick to give the Lady Cards their third goal of the game. Rubio put the exclamation point on the game with another goal in the last five minutes of the game on an assist from Paris Owen.

Vs Hallettsville, W, 4-0

Columbus followed up their strong performance on Monday with another strong performance over the weekend against the Brahmettes. Once again, the Lady Cards’ defense had a good showing with another clean sheet on the scoreboard. Offensively, they allowed their leading scorer and impact striker Karina Rubio to take the lead as she provided all four Columbus goals in the game.

Rubio opened the scoring quickly with a goal in the first five minutes of play. In the 20th minute, she slotted home a shot off the end of a pass from Savannah Daniel. That would not be the duo’s only connection of the game as they reconvened for another goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Rubio earned her final goal on a penalty kick in the final 15 minutes of the competition.
