Columbus All-District Soccer honors

Columbus All-District Soccer honors

The Columbus Cardinals had a handful of players each from the boys’ and girls’ team named to the first and second All-district teams.

Starting off with the girls’ team, the Lady Cardinals had Lexi Ybarra, Scarlett McClelland and Maria Garcia all named to the first All-district team. Ybarra was one of if not the best goalkeepers throughout district play and earned every ounce of credit for showing up and being the hardest worker on the field every game.

McClelland and Garcia did an excellent job of keeping the team balanced and took on that veteran leadership role very well. They kept the team even keeled through many challenging times throughout the season all while being contributors on both offense and defense.

The duo set the standard and did a great job holding their teammates to that standard and it led to a lot of success for the Lady Cards this season.

On the second All-District team the Lady Cards saw Shacherin Ruiz, Savannah Daniel and Courtney Hinson be selected. These ladies brought the energy and the excitement for this team this season.

They were always around and, in the mix, causing havoc for the opposing goalies. They attacked the net with an insatiable hunger to score and ruined a lot of goalie’s stat lines because of it.

For the boys Tomas Elias, Javier Mendoza and Mario Rubio were all selected to the first All-District team. Being the driving force behind their late push into the playoffs the trio combined their talents to always keep defenses guessing.

They are quick, crafty and extremely talented with the ball on their feet, and they tortured opposing teams with their savvy play.

Jesus Mendoza and Edmundo Rubio were named to the second All-District team for the Cardinals playing a similar role as McClelland and Garcia. They kept things steady for the team, never let the team dwell on the lows for too long but never let them ride the highs for too long either.

They also set the standard laid out by their coach and made sure everyone met that standard. They were crucial down the stretch and a big part of the Cardinals tasting playoff soccer this season.

The Cardinals will look to build off this season and its success as they look ahead to the 2025 season.
