Cardinals still flying high in district

The Columbus Cardinals are still the team to beat in district play after winning back-to-back district games last week.

The improved their record to 11-0 in district after beating the Palacios Sharks and Yoakum Bulldogs last week to strengthen their grip on the top spot in the district.

@ Palacios, W, 6-1

The Cardinals started their week by heading towards the water to battle it out with the Sharks.

Despite the hour-long drive to Palacios the Cardinals showed up ready to play and they go things started early. In the second inning the Cardinals scored three runs to jump out to a 3-0 lead early in the game.

From there, the Sharks cut into the lead scoring one run in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals punched back with another three-run inning to close out the game 6-1.

The Cardinals’ defense did a great job keeping the Sharks’ offense in check all game long. James Janek was back on the mound for the Cardinals and had six strikeouts in five innings giving up one run on one hit.

Winning on the road is always a confidence boost to teams and it was no different for the Cardinals because they came back to their home field and handled their business agaisnt Yoakum.

Vs. Yoakum, W, 8-0

The Cardinals offense again got a run on the board early to establish the lead early in the game. They put the ball in Kaleb Kuhn’s hand after that and the Bulldogs offense was silent.

Kuhn threw 62 strikes on 86 pitches (72% strikes) on his way to striking out 12 batters and only allowing one hit. Kuhn made the job easy for his defenders, but the Cardinals’ ability to keep runners off the bases allowed Kuhn to focus solely on pitching in the game, and it resulted in a shutout for them.

The Cardinals added the rest of their runs in the fourth inning posting a seven-run inning to bring the score to 8-0. The Cardinals defense continued to dominate as the game wore on and the Cardinals added another win to their record shortly after.

The Cardinals have three games left on the schedule with their next one coming on the road against Edna on Tuesday, April 16, looking to lock up the first seed with antoher win.
