Columbus prepares to host HOP Priest tourney

The Columbus Cardinals will play as the host school to the annual HOP Priest baseball tournament starting on Thursday, Feb. 23. The tournament is often attended by many local and surrounding area schools such as Weimar and Brazos. The 33rd installment of the tournament will feature many of the same players for both Weimar and Columbus as each team as a host of players returning to the squad for this season.

Last year’s tournament began in an emotional way for the Cards as they recognized a dearly departed supporter, Kristie Geisler. Prior to their first game, the team released balloons in a symbolic display as well as revealed the memorial bench just behind home plate.

Columbus went on to split their games in the tournament to start their season off that eventually led to a postseason run at the end of the year.

Weimar had a strong run during last year’s HOP Priest tourney as they played through three undefeated games. The Wildcats will be looking to recreate their success from last year’s tournament and build some momentum off of their own postseason appearance from last season.

The tournament will range from Thursday, Feb. 23 to Saturday, Feb. 25.
