Updated animal control ordinance discussed

EAGLE LAKE CITY COUNCIL

EAGLE LAKE — The April 9 regular meeting for Eagle Lake City Council featured a host of proclamations, presentations and discussions over topics such as the recently passed Animal Control Ordinance as well as the repair and improvement of the post office and the Eagle Lake Regional Airport.

The council was visited by Dr. Mazie Leftwich representing the Wellness Council of Greater Colorado Valley and the Texas A&M University Housing and Transportation class that is surveying the transportation needs of Colorado County The council also passed a proclamation declaring the week of April 14 to April 20 as National Public Telecommunicators Week.

There were a few other proclamations passed as well for mental health and for first responders. The month of May was declared Mental Health Month while the week of May 12 through May 18 is National Police Week which includes National Peace Officer Memorial Day on May 15.

120 Day extension to Tony Tyler for roof repairs on downtown building at 215 East Main St.

The council discussed the recent Animal Control Ordinance with Kim Hartman who expressed concerns that there would be administrative issues included with the enforcement of the amended ordinance for the portion of the law regarding cats.

Charles “Tink” Jackson cited that the registration of dogs will make it possible to track a pet back to its original household if the owners allow it to roam freely.

An example provided was if a free-roaming dog bit a child or other resident, the city would be able to track the owners and potentially levy fines if said pet is unregistered.

Mayor Kelley ultimately said that without the proper registration, family pets could potentially face an untimely end should they be picked up by the pound. The council decided that there was no action necessary following the discussion.

The city authorized the completion of an updated airport layout plan for the Eagle Lake Regional Airport. They also approved the certification of funds for the project to complete the proposed plans.

The council approved a budget amendment to include the cost of a roof replacement for the Post Office as well as to receive grant funds from LCRA and Endeavors to repair the Municipal Swimming Pool.

The Council proposed a community fundraiser to restore E.H. Henry Park. They discussed the vandalism that occurs in the restrooms and expressed that the city would not be directing any more funds towards removing the graffiti, but restoring the rest of the park could potentially be a topic desired by the community.

Mayor Kelley said the city will not be spending money restoring the park without first contacting community comments due to the inability to police and prevent damage to the park. The council tabled the item as they hope to continue the discussion and potentially reach out for community engagement
