A View Of Columbus Through Rose-Colored Glasses
This column is dedicated to acknowledging examples of positives that express the community spirit of Columbus — our town.
When you buy a new pair of shoes, they have to fit well if you are to be happy.
The same is true if you build a bridge across the East river crossing of the Colorado River. It just has to fit.
These illustrations are simply to emphasize the importance of a fit when you move from the city to a small town. This story is an introduction to praise and compliment our new physician, Dr Carl Dahlberg, and his wife Maria Dahlberg.
The positive fit begins with Columbus Community Hospital. Dr Dahlberg is quick to remind one of how fortunate we are to have our fine hospital.
The Dahlberg’s country home adds to their pleasure with our community. They have owned the home for a number of years and have used it for their country retreat. Both of the Dahlbergs are members of the Columbus Lions Club.
Maria became a member of the “Girlfriends”, a mentoring group for the Boys & Girls Club of Columbus. The Dahlbergs are Methodists and have visited our local church where Maria has already worked at our local food bank.
Dr Dahlberg began his life in Maryland; however, the family moved to Amarillo when he was only 6 - quite a shock! He recalls some great happenings after the move to Amarillo. His years of education in Amarillo were stellar. It was there that he became a musician. A truly special occurrence was that he was discovered by a talent scout at age 16. This led to his being a pianist at the Grand Ol’ Oprey.
He played for entertainers like Chet Atkins and Roy Orbison. This experience sent him on his way to Juliard. He remembers that it was about this time that he read a book about Dr Cooley abd Dr DeBakey. He remembers quite clearly this being the time that he set his goals to begin a career in medicine. He enrolled in Baylor University in Waco and later in Baylor Med School in Houston.
Dr Dahlberg’s practice grew tremendously, and he worked with nearly 4000 patients. He and Maria were happy raising 2 sons in Houston. The boys became Eagle Scouts just as their father had been. The family loved their country home, and they made many friends in Columbus. As Dr Dahlberg realized the accomplishments of Columbus Community Hospital, the idea of a country home and growing country hospital seemed a good match.
The move to Columbus has brought the Dahlbergs a delightful country life. The hunch about the move has proven true. Maria has had a wonderful career as a nurse and as a teacher in Katy at Seven Lakes High School.
I like Dr Dahlberg’s admittance that Maria is the ‘long suit” of the two.
She is quick to offer her assistance in many situations. She is eager to learn and is studying to be a Texas Master Naturalist and her second class is to be a bee steward in Navasota. Dr Dahlberg is a certified Pulmonologist and is certified in Internal Medicine.
How fortunate and happy is Columbus to welcome Dr Carl and Maria Dahlberg!
