The Columbus Cardinals traveled to Altair to participate in the Swamp Relays at Rice Consolidated High School on Thursday, March 28.

The Cardinals had athletes compete in multiple events at the meet and ended up performing strongly.

Starting with the Girls group they finished in 10th place as a team at the meet. They were well within striking distance to climb the standings but ended up securing a spot in the top 10 regardless.

Things started off strong for the Lady Cards in the 100m event where Scarlett McClelland and Allie Cranek finished in 7th and 8th place, respectively. Mc-Clelland finished with a time of 12.69 seconds while Cranek was right behind her with a time of 13.16 seconds.

In the 4x100 relay, the Lady Cards made the team of Kaytlyn Torres, Taylor Morrow, Faith Cleveland and McClelland responsible for this race. Their coaches chose wisely because the group turned in a time of 50.88 seconds to earn 3rd place in the race.

In the field events the Lady Cards had just as strong of a showing with Andreanna Shropshire throwing the shot put 34 feet and three inches do add a 5th finish to the Lady Cards day.

Morrow also competed in field events for the Lady Cards, specifically the Long and Triple Jump. She jumped 16 feet and three inches in the long jump and followed that up by jumping 34 feet and four and a half inches in the triple jump and earned 4th place in both events.

In the boys’ group they also finished in 10th place as a team and had multiple athletes across multiple events perform strongly.

Adam Schobel got things started for the Cardinals in the 100m race along with teammate Giovani Martinez. The pair finished 5th and 9th place, respectively, with times of 23.01 seconds for Schobel and 23.46 for Martinez.

This opened the door for Brody Vinklarek and Rylan Carruthers to perform well in the 400m and they delivered. Coming in 10th and 11th place the Cardinals duo was separated by .06 seconds. Vinklarek finished with a time of 54.22 and Caruthers finished with a time of 54.28.

Next was the 3200m race where Elijah Owen cracked the top 10, finishing in 9th place with a time of 10:59.58.

This allowed the relay teams to run with not a lot of pressure to score well and it paid off for the Cardinals. The 4x100m relay team consisted of Martinez, Schobel, Braylon Fisher and Ty’Vone Whitehead.

The team finished their race with a time of 43.55 seconds which earned them 3rd place. That same relay team competed in the 4x200m and came in 5th place with a time of 1:32.25.

Lastly was the 4x400m team consisting of Ezra Hill, Vinklarek, Carruthers and Xavier Woods. They finished in 6th place with a time of 3:37.90.

The Cardinals will be looking to build off this strong showing at the Swamp Relays and will try to make some noise before going to the district meet.
